How to Add Feet, Inches and Fractions Without Unit Errors

A tape measurement such as 12 ft 6½ in contains two units and a fraction. Keep those parts separate or convert everything to inches before calculating. Writing 12.65 in a decimal calculator does not mean 12 feet and 6½ inches.

Choose one unit for the working calculation

There are 12 inches in a foot. To convert a mixed measurement to inches, multiply the feet by 12 and add the remaining inches. For 12 ft 6½ in, the result is (12 × 12) + 6.5 = 150.5 in.

To convert inches back to feet and inches, divide by 12, keep the whole feet and express the remainder in inches. For example, 195.25 in contains 16 whole feet and 3.25 in, written as 16 ft 3¼ in.

Add two measurements step by step

12 ft 6½ in + 3 ft 8¾ in = 16 ft 3¼ in
  1. Convert the first measurement: 12 × 12 + 6.5 = 150.5 in.
  2. Convert the second: 3 × 12 + 8.75 = 44.75 in.
  3. Add: 150.5 + 44.75 = 195.25 in.
  4. Convert back: 195.25 − (16 × 12) = 3.25 in.

You can also add the feet and inches separately. The inches total 15¼, so carry 12 of those inches into one extra foot. Forgetting that carry is a common way to leave an answer in an awkward or misleading form.

Subtract by converting first

Consider 10 ft 2¼ in − 3 ft 7½ in. The first value is 122.25 in and the second is 43.5 in. Their difference is 78.75 in, which is 6 ft 6¾ in.

Converting first avoids borrowing a foot while working with fractions. If the result is negative, check which measurement you intended to subtract; do not silently remove the minus sign.

Read decimal feet correctly

7.5 ft means 7 ft 6 in, because 0.5 × 12 = 6. It does not mean 7 ft 5 in. Similarly, 7.25 ft is 7 ft 3 in. Decimal inches are different: 0.5 in is simply half an inch.

½0.5

Multiplying lengths changes the unit

A 12 ft 6 in side is 12.5 ft. Multiply it by an 8 ft side and the area is 100 ft². The result is an area, not 100 linear feet. Adding a third dimension gives volume, provided all three inputs use compatible units.

This distinction matters when moving between material types. A length for trim, an area for drywall and a volume for concrete cannot share the same unit price without conversion.

Use the feet-inch calculator in Escuadra

Escuadra’s free calculator accepts feet, inches and fractions. Enter the measurement with its unit keys instead of treating the tape notation as a decimal number. Use the examples above as a quick check that the intended measurements were entered.

Keep precision through the calculation and decide the final rounding based on the job. A displayed fraction is not a substitute for checking the tape, the cut allowance or the required installation tolerance.

Questions about this estimate

Is 6.5 inches the same as 6½ inches?

Yes. That is decimal inches. It should not be confused with 6.5 feet, which is 6 feet 6 inches.

Should I round each measurement before adding?

Preserve the measured precision through the calculation when practical. Repeated intermediate rounding can change the total; choose the final rounding deliberately.
